ROLE COMPETENCIES & ACTIVITIES
The responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Data Preparation for Data Visualization
- Prepare and organize datasets specifically for Tableau visualization as well as other visualization software such Power BI and Shiny.
- Transform raw data into formats optimized for visualization tools, including creating calculated fields, data hierarchies, and metadata layers.
- Work with diverse data sources, such as databases, spreadsheets, APIs, and cloud platforms, to ensure seamless integration with Tableau, Power BI, and Shiny.
- Use tools like Tableau Prep, Power Query, or R scripts for cleaning, reshaping, and combining datasets for effective visualization.
- Optimize datasets for performance, scalability, and efficiency across multiple visualization platforms.
Dashboard Design and Development
- Develop, design, and maintain Tableau dashboards as the primary visualization platform, while leveraging Power BI and Shiny as supplementary tools when appropriate.
- Create visually appealing, interactive dashboards that cater to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Implement advanced features in Tableau, such as calculated fields, parameters, filters, and actions, while utilizing similar functionalities in Power BI (DAX formulas, slicers) and Shiny (dynamic UI elements).
- Continuously improve dashboards across all platforms based on user feedback, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and evolving needs.
- Design dashboards with performance optimization in mind, including minimizing load times and ensuring scalability across Tableau, Power BI, and Shiny environments.
Dashboard Testing and Quality Assurance
- Validate the accuracy, consistency, and functionality of dashboards in Tableau, Power BI, and Shiny before deployment.
- Conduct regular quality assurance checks to ensure data integrity and visualization alignment with project requirements across platforms.
- Test interactive features, such as filters, drill-downs, and dashboard actions, ensuring functionality across all tools.
- Troubleshoot and resolve performance, usability, or visualization issues in Tableau, Power BI, and Shiny dashboards.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of testing processes and develop a checklist for consistent quality across all platforms.
Collaboration and Visualization Strategy
- Collaborate with statisticians, analysts, and data engineers to ensure that visualizations across Tableau, Power BI, and Shiny meet project goals and stakeholder needs.
- Incorporate feedback to refine and enhance dashboards, leveraging the strengths of each visualization tool as needed.
- Train users to effectively interact with dashboards across platforms, empowering them to make data-driven decisions.
- Develop reusable templates, visualization standards, and guidelines to standardize dashboard creation across Tableau, Power BI, and Shiny.
- Provide insights and recommendations to expand the organization’s overall visualization strategy, incorporating best practices across tools.
Reporting and Communication
- Present dashboards and insights to stakeholders, ensuring clear and actionable communication, regardless of the visualization tool used.
- Document dashboard designs and workflows, including data sources, assumptions, methodologies, and design choices for Tableau, Power BI, and Shiny.
- Share progress updates on dashboard development and enhancements across platforms with internal teams.
- Actively participate in team meetings to align on visualization objectives, strategies, and the integration of multiple tools.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
- Stay updated on the latest features, techniques, and best practices for Tableau, Power BI, Shiny, and other data visualization tools to enhance dashboard functionality.
- Explore and implement innovative visualization techniques and interactive elements to improve user experience across platforms.
- Identify opportunities to incorporate emerging technologies such as augmented analytics, real-time data integration, and advanced visualizations (e.g., geospatial visualizations, predictive analytics dashboards).
- Promote a culture of data-driven decision-making by designing dashboards that effectively communicate key insights and inspire action.
- Actively contribute to the development of best practices, templates, and guidelines for visualizations across the department.
- Participate in workshops, webinars, and training sessions to continuously improve visualization skills and share knowledge with the team.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- 7+ Proven experience in designing, developing, and maintaining Tableau dashboards in professional or academic settings.
- Strong skills in preparing and organizing data for Tableau, including the use of Tableau Prep or similar tools.
- Proven track record of developing Tableau dashboards for professional or academic projects.
- Strong portfolio showcasing Tableau dashboards and visualizations, demonstrating an ability to communicate insights effectively.
- Hands-on experience in creating interactive and user-friendly visualizations using Tableau and other visualization software including Power Bi and Shiny.
- Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Excel, and SQL.
- Understanding of best practices in dashboard design, performance optimization, and storytelling with data.
- Familiarity with integrating Tableau dashboards with various data sources such as databases, spreadsheets, and APIs.
- Basic knowledge of scripting or automation for Tableau tasks is a plus (e.g., Tableau JavaScript API or Python).
- Familiarity with agile project management methodologies is advantageous.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, Economics, Business Analytics, or a related field.
- Tableau Desktop Certification or equivalent is highly desirable.
- Advanced coursework or certification in data visualization, business intelligence, or analytics is a plus.
